Circus Tricks is a SUPER FUN WAY to build advanced level skill on both ends of the leash, while having fun with your dog. Circus Tricks is the fun name / the technical name is COMPLEX BEHAVIORAL CHAINS. This is about timing, observation, verbal/body cues, and including the handler in some of the skills. This is super interactive, super creative, and a great cross training skill to have between seasons or dog sports, or for extra mental exercise. We start with both verbal and body cue and work towards getting all behaviors on verbal unless a body cue is necessary.

This was one of the Paws & People competition foundation classes for all dog sport competition Teams, as well as family pet owners that were going to be doing a lot of adventuring.

I have been practicing, using, and refining these skills since 1985 with all of my performance/work dogs, and it is not only effective but super fun to practice.

You must have time for homework each day to get the most out of your class. For every 1 hour class there is at least 4 hours of training time together at home.

DISTRACTION TRAINING

WHERE - Border Farm

WHEN - TBD 2025

DATES -

TIME -

COST - $225

INSTRUCTORS - Nancy

Working around reasonable distractions is hard for handler and dog, a little or a lot. Many of the teams that have gone through our distraction training programs want to go and do things with their dog, and have some good skills, but it is the distractions that seem to hijack good efforts.

This class teaches you how to work with your dog, build better handling skills, and work in and around distractions with

  • low arousal
  • focus on team
  • skills that are solid
  • better timing
  • observation
  • use of space
  • being prepared

PRE-REQUISITE - APRIL/MAY/JUNE are our kidding / settling in Does for milking - you must have been attending  minimum of 2 months of goat camp in order to be with us through this super joyous and monstrously busy season. The Mama's are protective, the kids are new and fragile, and everyone is getting use to a new schedule and management. We will not start new people during this season, only people who have been attending camp previously that our goats know.

SAMPLE TRAINING VIDEO

Whether you want to learn about goats, or increase your skill with your dog by working with another species, this camp is hands on education. In all honesty, the best dog trainers are trainers that also work with other species. Your skill increases when you learn how to apply it to varied species in their own habitat.

All animals are unique - goats in particular are both exciting and challenging to work with. They are a prey animal, herd oriented, matriarchal, have a very rigid and structured social order, intelligent, learn quickly and easily if they feel safe, and can cause a great deal of damage to their handler if not handled correctly.

Our goats are Alpine/Nubian crosses - we breed them for dairy and packing on trails. All of our goats are handled daily. Each month offers a different focus with our goats besides daily maintenance. Whether this is getting ready for winter, loading/trail skills, breeding, kidding, milking, training - we have a full program

  • marker training
  • care
  • cleaning
  • feeding / what is species appropriate
  • health/maintenance
  • natural rearing protocols
  • animal husbandry
  • learning theory
  • ethology
  • timing
  • space/trust
  • handling skills
  • use of words/consistency
  • feeding
  • gear
  • kidding
  • kid care
  • Doe care
  • Wether care

NOTE - once we receive reg/pay there are NO REFUNDS, the class size will be small so we don't overwhelm our herd, and so each person can learn as much as possible. Please make sure you check dates/times before you reg/pay to make sure our GOAT CAMP works for your schedule. Again, NO REFUNDS.

NOTE - you will receive a detailed outline at the beginning of each month that will be specific to what we will be working on / doing.

NOTE - upon reg/pay we will send you a liability form that needs to be filled out and completed

NOTE - no children

NOTE - you need to be prepared and able to work/dress for work on a farm/listen to directions and follow them. Working with farm animals that are valuable and add value to a farm takes a great deal of effort, consideration, and respect.
